Dan Gardner wrote a great article in the Vancouver Sun about the Glass Cliff that powerful women often face. This happens when a sinking organisation promotes a woman to the top. He called it the Kim Campbell phenomena referring to our solo female Prime Minister. When women in these difficult situations fail, she of course fails but so too does the organisation. What Mr Garner noticed is that women are often promoted to high levels when no man wants the job. Only when the organisation is precarious do they give women leadership. But the real harm is that not only do we lose a powerful woman as she stumbles, but we also blame the woman for the failure. I will watch to see what happens in the upcoming elections in Alberta where two women are trying for the top job as Premier and both were put in place as their parties were fumbling.
