I just read an article about a new report by a former judge (Marie Deschamps) about the Canadian military. Having done conflict resolution work in “military-type” (or frankly all hierarchical) organizations I can say that hostile and sexualized environments are not rare. What is most important to see is WHY these cultures thrive. It has much to do with POWER and the centralization of power at the top. Just like a family who is afraid of a bully father. No one has the courage to speak up, so abuse thrives. The ONLY solution is to provide those who have no power a SAFE place for those to tell “truth to power.” Or create a culture of openness and honesty rather than fear.
