Nine years after being gang raped, Mukhtar Mai’s fight is sadly over. The Supreme Court of Pakistan released 5 men who were ordered by her tribe to gang rape her. Mai had won international acclaim for standing up for women. In 2002 a tribal court of village elders ordered the rape because Mai’s older brother was accused of having illicit relations with a wom an from
a rival tribe. Human rights groups criticized the Supreme Court’s decision and suggested that it would put all Pakisani women in more danger. (Source: Vancouver Sun April 22, 2011) .
