Why do men spend so much on Mother’s Day

I recently read an article saying that men spend more money than women on Mother’s Day gifts. But wait. Something is missing. The article wrongly suggests that men are more generous than women and that perhaps it is because women have “conflicted” relationship with their mothers. The author of the article forgot some critical information. First of all, men spend significantly less for mothers and other family members on every other day of the year. Second women tend to be closer to their mothers than men. Because of this tight and engaging relationship they have more opportunities to come into conflict. And third, men tend to buy big gifts rather than small gifts. I would venture that these big purchases are not due to pure generosity but rather as compensation for guilt or for show. I hope not but perhaps a better title for an article is: Why men buy such big gifts for mothers.
