Please listen when civil liberties lawyers speak! Today they are talking again about Bill 30 and our government’s (Safety Minister Vic Toew’s) suggestion that police officers need new laws to help them access your personal information and Internet use. You should be suspicious. As a lawyer I have seen too many erosions of personal liberties in the name of protecting us from crime. Like body searches at the airport. I like knowing that a judge must decide whether a police officer can infringe my rights of privacy. It’s a slippery slope when big brother keeps telling you that more and more laws are needed for your own good. I will donate today to the Civil Liberties Society in case the government decides to make more laws like this.
